Esks tinker with the roster

The Esks have released three players while bringing in three new faces today. Released were offensive lineman Calvin Armstrong, wide receiver Tremayne Kirkland and non-import receiver Kevin Wuthrich. Coming on board the Green & Gold are imports Marko Mitchell (wide receiver) and Leon Joe (linebacker), as well as non-import Nate Binder (wide receiver).

Mitchell is an imposing figure at six-foot-four, 218-pounds, who was drafted by the Washington Redskins in the seventh round of the 2009 NFL Draft. The receiver has speed to burn as he has clocked a 4.49 40-yard dash time at the NFL combine. Mitchell is an intriguing prospect due to the fact that he is a former basketball player who turned to football late in his high school career. He attended two community colleges before signing on with the University of Nevada, Reno where he played for two years before catching the eye of Washington scouts. With Fred Stamps still injured, and the Esks offense in need of another playmaker, Mitchell has the tools to succeed in the CFL.

Joe is a more familiar name to CFL fans as the linebacker was most recently was part of the Toronto Argonauts organization, but was released on August 31. He joins the Esks practice roster and provides depth should injuries occur. Joe has carved out a career of being a fringe roster player both in the NFL, where he spent parts of five seasons with seven organizations. In 2009 he moved north to the CFL, but has yet to record any measurables stats.

Binder was selected by the BC Lions in the fourth round of the 2010 CFL Draft, but was released in training camp by the organization. A product of Tusculem College, Binder has decent speed as he ran a 4.56 40-yard dash time at the CFL Evaluation Camp this past spring. He was also signed to the practice roster.
